A man in Ireland is to be sentenced for coercing a woman to end her nine-week pregnancy using misoprostol and threatening violence, marking one of the first cases under Ireland’s 2018 abortion law.
A man in his 20s is set to be sentenced for unlawfully terminating a nine-week pregnancy by forcing a woman to take five misoprostol tablets and locking her in a room, according to a case heard at Letterkenny Circuit Court in Ireland.
The incident occurred on Valentine’s Day 2020, after the woman decided to continue her pregnancy, contrary to the man’s wishes.
He allegedly threatened to physically force the fetus out if she did not comply, and audio recordings captured his coercive demands.
The woman, who suffered severe physical effects, managed to contact gardaí after escaping.
The man, who had withheld access to his phone for over four years, pleaded guilty to charges under Ireland’s 2018 Termination of Pregnancy Act and to assault.
The case is believed to be one of the first of its kind in the country.
