Louisiana’s 2026 Senate and House primaries begin under new closed-party rules, with key candidates qualifying.
Qualifying has begun for Louisiana’s May 16, 2026, closed-party primary elections, with Republicans John Fleming and Democrats Jamie Davis officially entering the U.S. Senate race against incumbent Bill Cassidy.
In Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District, Republican candidates Misti Cordell, Rick Edmonds, Michael Mebruer, and Blake Miguez, along with Democrats Jessee Fleenor and Dan McKay, have qualified.
The new closed-primary system, enacted in 2024, requires voters to be registered with a party to vote in that party’s primary.
The change applies to U.S. Senate, House, Supreme Court, Public Service Commission, and BESE races.
