Italy approves bill enabling naval blockades of migrant ships, fines, and offshore transfers amid rising migration concerns.
Italy’s government has approved a controversial migration bill granting authorities the power to impose naval blockades on migrant ships during exceptional circumstances like threats to public order, national security, or sudden surges in arrivals.
The measure, which requires parliamentary approval, allows blockades up to 30 days—extendable to six months—and includes fines of up to 50,000 euros and boat confiscation, targeting humanitarian rescue vessels.
It also enables the transfer of intercepted migrants to third countries deemed safe, potentially reviving an offshore processing center in Albania.
The bill aligns with a new EU migration pact allowing member states to deny asylum and deport migrants to safe countries.
Italy has seen a drop in sea arrivals this year, but nearly 490 migrants have gone missing in the Central Mediterranean, according to the UN’s IOM.
