Ireland will review misogyny in its police force after a survivor’s advocacy led to government commitment.
A systemic review of misogyny within Ireland’s police force, An Garda Síochána, is set to proceed after domestic abuse campaigner Margaret Loftus met with Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan and the Garda Ombudsman.
Loftus, who endured a 14-year legal battle after being assaulted by her ex-husband, a former Garda, in 2012, said the justice system caused her significant trauma and that the police failed to protect her.
She described the recent meeting as productive and a shift from past dismissive responses, noting the government has committed to fully funding and resourcing the review.
The Department of Justice confirmed the discussion was constructive, with the minister listening to her concerns and commending her advocacy for supporting other survivors of gender-based violence.
