Ireland saw a 505-case surge in STIs in early 2026, led by chlamydia, while HIV cases fell.
Over 1,600 sexually transmitted infections (STIs) were reported in Ireland during the first four weeks of 2026, a 505-case increase from the same period last year, according to the HPSC.
Chlamydia accounted for 881 cases, a 62.25% rise, while gonorrhoea, genital herpes, mpox, syphilis, and trichomoniasis also increased.
HIV cases dropped to 34, a 35.85% decline.
The HSE Dublin and Midlands region had the highest infection rate with 309 cases, followed by Cork and Kerry with 63 combined.
