India's Supreme Court updated its Senior Advocate rules in 2026, creating a new committee to oversee appointments based on merit, experience, and conduct.
The Supreme Court of India has launched new 2026 guidelines for designating Senior Advocates, replacing the 2023 rules after a 2025 judgment deemed prior methods flawed.
A permanent committee, led by the Chief Justice and two senior-most judges, now oversees the process, excluding Bar Council representatives.
Applications are accepted annually with at least 21 days for submission, requiring 10 years of legal experience, age 45 or older (with exceptions), and no recent rejections or misconduct.
Decisions are based on legal ability, standing, expertise, and clean record, made by consensus or majority vote.
Rejected applicants may reapply after two years, and designations may be revoked for misconduct.
The court may also designate advocates without applications, with consent.
