Indian students studying abroad dropped 31% from 2023 to 2025, due to stricter foreign visas and improved domestic education options.
Indian students studying abroad fell to 6.26 lakh in 2025, a 31% drop from 9.08 lakh in 2023, according to government data shared in Parliament.
The decline follows a post-pandemic rise and coincides with stricter visa rules in Canada, Australia, the UK, and the US.
The government attributes the shift to domestic reforms under the National Education Policy 2020, including improved infrastructure, research funding, digital learning, and approvals for 14 foreign universities to set up campuses in India, with five in GIFT City, Gujarat.
