The Diocese of Brooklyn will close seven Catholic elementary schools in Queens and Brooklyn by June 2026 due to steep enrollment declines since 2019 and ongoing financial struggles, including operating deficits and rising costs.
The schools—Sacred Heart, St. Bartholomew, St. Nicholas of Tolentine, Incarnation, St. Thomas the Apostle, St. Elizabeth, and Our Lady of Trust—saw enrollment drop 21% to 55%, making operations unsustainable.
All activities will continue through the end of the school year.
Families and staff can access transition support and scholarship resources at catholicschoolsbq.org/schooltransitions.
Deacon Kevin McCormack called the closures painful but necessary, reaffirming the diocese’s commitment to sustaining Catholic education in the region.
