AI project On The Docket visually recreates Supreme Court decision announcements, including a key immunity ruling, for public access.
A new AI project called On The Docket, led by Northwestern University’s Jerry Goldman, creates visual depictions of U.S. Supreme Court justices delivering their written decisions, making public the court’s bench announcements for the first time in a publicly accessible format.
Using AI-generated avatars based on public photos and videos, the project synchronizes realistic movements with recorded audio of actual rulings, including Chief Justice John Roberts’ announcement of a 6-to-3 decision granting former presidents immunity for official acts, followed by Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s dissent.
Though the Supreme Court has long restricted public access to decision announcements—limiting them to those in the courtroom—the project aims to increase transparency by bringing these public moments to the public, despite technical challenges and the court’s historical resistance to such efforts.
