Two Chinese nationals charged with spying on an Australian Buddhist group for China, under Australia’s foreign interference laws.
Two Chinese nationals, a 25-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, have been charged with reckless foreign interference for allegedly spying on Canberra’s Guan Yin Citta Buddhist group on behalf of China’s Public Security Bureau.
The arrests follow an investigation linked to ASIO intelligence and Operation Autumn-Shield, which began in 2025.
They are the fourth and fifth individuals charged under Australia’s foreign interference laws since 2018, carrying a maximum 15-year prison sentence.
Authorities warn that foreign governments continue to target diaspora communities through surveillance and intimidation, urging the public to report suspicious activity via the National Security Hotline.
