Two Azerbaijani cultural sites added to UNESCO’s Islamic World Heritage List in February 2026.
On February 10, 2026, two Azerbaijani cultural sites—the Aghdam Imarat Historical and Architectural Museum Complex and the Shusha State Historical and Architectural Reserve—were added to the ICESCO Islamic World Heritage List during the organization’s 13th session in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
The recognition marks the first international heritage designation for Aghdam’s monuments.
The Aghdam site, centered on an 18th-century palace of Panah Ali Khan, founder of the Karabakh Khanate, includes mausoleums, a cemetery, and restored ceremonial buildings, and was officially established in February 2025.
Shusha, a historically significant cultural center, was also inscribed.
The decision reflects Azerbaijan’s efforts to restore and preserve its heritage, supported by state leadership and international cooperation.
