Myanmar's junta airstrikes killed 1,728+ since 2024; leader blames global inaction, praises China's mediation.
General Yawd Serk, leader of Myanmar’s Restoration Council of Shan State, accused the international community of ignoring the military junta’s intensified airstrikes on civilians, which have killed at least 1,728 people and hit over 1,000 locations since late 2024.
Speaking from a remote base near the Thai border, he said only China has actively intervened, mediating among armed groups to protect its Belt and Road interests.
He condemned the junta’s January election as illegitimate, praised the ousted government of Aung San Suu Kyi, and called for political dialogue, trust-building, and a federal system.
While China claims a constructive role, the conflict remains complex, with shifting alliances and ongoing violence.
