The Marine Corps picks GA-ASI’s YFQ-42A drone for testing in its new combat aircraft program.
The U.S. Marine Corps has selected General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) to evaluate the YFQ-42A unmanned aircraft under its MUX TACAIR Collaborative Combat Aircraft program.
The contract, awarded competitively, will integrate a government-provided mission kit into the YFQ-42A surrogate to assess performance in expeditionary operations.
GA-ASI will rapidly develop autonomy software for the kit, a sensor-rich, software-defined system capable of kinetic and non-kinetic effects, enhancing human-machine teaming.
The YFQ-42A, which first flew in August 2025, uses a modular, low-cost design enabling rapid mission adaptation.
The effort builds on GA-ASI’s prior work with the U.S. Air Force and its experience with systems like the MQ-9 Reaper.
The program aims to advance the Marine Corps’ expeditionary air capabilities in contested environments.
