Louisiana’s Congressman Clay Higgins urges Trump to protect Gulf shrimpers from cheaper Indian imports via new trade deal.
Louisiana Congressman Clay Higgins has urged President Trump to protect the U.S. shrimp industry from the impact of a new U.S.-India trade deal, warning that reduced tariffs could flood the market with cheaper, farm-raised Indian shrimp.
In a letter dated February 3, Higgins expressed concern that domestic wild-caught shrimpers, especially in the Gulf Coast, face unfair competition and potential health and environmental risks from imports.
He called for stricter inspections, enforcement of trade laws, and support for legislation to block unsafe imports.
Higgins also requested that the USDA purchase Gulf shrimp for school meals and federal food programs to stabilize prices and support local fishermen.
The letter was shared with top administration officials amid ongoing trade discussions between the U.S. and India.
