Lord Doyle suspended after apologizing for backing convicted child abuser Sean Morton.
Lord Matthew Doyle, former communications chief for Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has been suspended from the Labour Party and stripped of the whip after apologizing for campaigning for Sean Morton, a Scottish councillor convicted of possessing indecent images of children.
Doyle, appointed to the House of Lords in January 2026, said he believed Morton’s claims of innocence in 2017 before his guilty plea, acknowledging his judgment was flawed.
He stated his contact with Morton after conviction was minimal and emphasized his condemnation of the crimes and support for victims.
The Labour Party is conducting an internal investigation, while opposition leaders and the SNP have called for transparency on vetting processes used before Doyle’s peerage appointment.
