Kenya warns against 21 unapproved, potentially unsafe phone brands; urges buyers to verify devices via IMEI.
The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has warned citizens against buying or using 21 unapproved mobile phone brands, including TINSIK, REALFONE, and FONROX, which lack mandatory Type Approval and may pose health, safety, and network interference risks.
The CA reported that 30% to 40% of phones in use may be counterfeit, urging consumers to only purchase from licensed vendors listed on its website.
To verify a device’s authenticity, users can check the IMEI via *#06# and send it to 1555 or use the CA’s online register.
The regulator emphasized that all phones must meet national and international safety and electromagnetic compatibility standards, and warned of enforcement actions against sellers of non-compliant devices.
