January 2026 was the 11th driest on record in the U.S., with above-average temperatures nationwide, despite cold snaps in the Midwest and record warmth in California and the West.
In January 2026, the U.S. average minimum temperature was 22.35°F, 2.59°F above the 1901–2000 norm, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information.
While parts of the Midwest, including Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania, were colder than average, no county recorded its coldest January on record, with Butler and Warren counties in Ohio experiencing the 13th coldest.
