Ireland has launched a permanent basic income program for artists, providing 2,000 selected creatives with €325 weekly for three years, starting in September 2026, following a successful 2022 pilot.
Funded with €18.27 million in Budget 2026, the scheme operates in three-year cycles, allowing artists to apply once every six years.
Minister Patrick O’Donovan called it a historic step, highlighting a 1.39 euro return for every euro invested and emphasizing its role in supporting artistic freedom, democracy, and cultural diplomacy.
While concerns remain about impacts on disability welfare benefits—since payments are treated as self-employment income—O’Donovan expressed hope to expand the program in the future.
