Inderdeep Singh Gosal, 29, pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the March 26, 2023, stabbing death of Paul Schmidt outside a Vancouver Starbucks. Video footage from the scene showed Gosal, wearing a grey hoodie and red pants, stabbing Schmidt six times in the chest during a 25-second altercation on the patio. Schmidt, pushing a stroller, fell face down after being stabbed. Gosal entered the café afterward and was arrested, with a silver folding knife found in his pocket testing positive for Schmidt’s blood. The Crown is arguing that Gosal intended to cause serious harm likely to result in death. The trial, being heard by a judge alone, continues with testimony from 11 witnesses and is expected to last about five weeks.
