The Diocese of Jackson, Mississippi, has completed its phase in the canonization process for Sister Thea Bowman, a Black Catholic religious sister and advocate for racial justice, paving the way for potential sainthood.
Bishop Joseph Kopacz presided over a closing Mass on February 9, sealing records from the cause opened in 2018 and forwarding them to the Vatican.
Bowman, who converted to Catholicism as a child, taught in Wisconsin, co-founded the National Black Sisters’ Conference, and helped create the 1987 hymnal “Lead Me, Guide Me.” Her 1989 speech to U.S. bishops, where she shared a spiritual song and affirmed the Church as her home, became iconic.
She died in 1990 from breast cancer and is buried in Memphis, Tennessee.
