Canada approves first at-home HIV test for sale, aiming to boost access and support 2030 HIV elimination goal.
Health Canada has approved the first at-home oral HIV self-test for sale in Canada, allowing individuals to check for HIV antibodies using a gum swab with results in about 20 minutes.
The OraQuick test, already used in the U.S. since 2012 and recommended by the WHO, is more accessible and less invasive than blood-based tests.
It is being distributed through Dr. Sean Rourke’s team at St. Michael’s Hospital, with a focus on reaching marginalized communities including Black, Indigenous, gay and bisexual men, and people who use drugs.
While the test is not for diagnosis—positive results require follow-up medical testing—advocates say it’s a critical step toward Canada’s 2030 goal of ending HIV as a public health threat.
Widespread use depends on government funding to support free access through community organizations, especially in underserved areas where stigma and health inequities persist.
