Belfast hospital begins UK trial of new pulsed field ablation for atrial fibrillation, improving treatment speed and patient recovery.
Atrial fibrillation (AF), a common heart rhythm disorder linked to stroke and heart failure, is being treated with a new pulsed field ablation system at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital, the first in the UK to trial the technology.
The Volt Pulsed Field Ablation (VPA) system uses high-energy pulses to target abnormal heart tissue with greater precision, enabling faster recovery, same-day discharge, and up to three procedures daily—boosting hospital efficiency.
Patients report reduced symptoms like palpitations and fatigue, while the method reduces reliance on anesthesia and staff.
The trial, involving 60 patients since September 2025, is expanding to some English hospitals, offering improved outcomes and safety for AF patients who don’t respond to medication.
