A U.S. judge halted deportation of Turkish Ph.D. student Rümeysa Öztürk, citing failed government proof of removability and retaliation for her pro-Palestinian speech.
A U.S. immigration judge has ended deportation proceedings against Rümeysa Öztürk, a Turkish Tufts University Ph.D. student and pro-Palestinian activist, ruling the government failed to prove she was removable.
The decision, made on January 29, followed her arrest in March 2025 after her student visa was revoked over an editorial she co-authored criticizing Tufts’ response to Israel’s war in Gaza.
Detained for 45 days, she was released after a federal judge found the government retaliated against her speech.
Her lawyers say the outcome challenges the use of immigration enforcement to suppress political expression.
The administration may still appeal.
