Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital in Mampong, Ghana, performed its first dialysis procedure on January 3, 2026, marking the first time in over 64 years since the hospital’s founding.
The newly established GH¢5.8 million Dialysis Centre, funded by a partnership led by SHEILD and supported by multiple organizations and donors, aims to improve access to life-saving renal care in the Eastern Region.
The facility, which includes four dialysis machines and trained staff, reduces the need for patients to travel long distances to major cities.
It follows SHEILD’s earlier dialysis centre at Police Hospital in Accra and addresses a national shortage of fewer than 400 machines across 16 regions.
Officials hailed the milestone as transformative for patients with chronic kidney disease and acute renal failure.
