Six Florida former state employees arrested in a $1.7M fraud scheme using fake property damage claims.
Six people, including former state employees Briana McCarthy and Carlotta Hawkins, were arrested in Florida over a $1.7 million fraud scheme involving fake property damage claims processed through the state’s risk management system.
McCarthy, a former Department of Financial Services worker, allegedly approved over 220 fraudulent claims, leading to payouts exceeding $7,000 each for some recipients.
Others charged include Brianna Hannan, Kearia Walker, Kavon Reese, and Whitney Branch, all accused of grand theft and related offenses.
Branch faces an additional charge for depositing a fraudulent check.
Authorities say the investigation is ongoing, more arrests may follow, and those who steal from taxpayers will face jail time.
The Florida Chief Financial Officer’s office confirmed the arrests on February 9, 2026.
