A proposed schedule change to the Donegal-Dublin flight threatens access to vital medical care for patients, sparking outcry from advocates.
A proposed overhaul of the Donegal-Dublin public service air route has raised alarms among campaigners who say it threatens a critical medical lifeline for cancer and other urgent care patients.
The current schedule, with midday departures and same-day return options, is set to be replaced with an earlier morning Dublin departure and later evening return, removing midday service and risking patients being stranded or forced to pay more for last-minute travel and overnight stays.
Donegal Cancer Flights and Services, which has supported patients since 2017, says the change undermines the route’s purpose, especially given the region’s lack of rail alternatives.
The group, with over 15,000 petition signatures, is seeking urgent talks with Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien, who is unavailable but will send a representative.
While the minister’s office confirmed the early morning Donegal departure and evening Dublin return will continue, campaigners argue the revised timetable still jeopardizes access, dignity, and reliability for vulnerable patients.
