A play about Gandhi’s assassin was canceled in Ahmedabad after protests, following similar disruptions in other cities.
A Gujarati play portraying Nathuram Godse, Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin, was cancelled in Ahmedabad on February 9 after protests by Youth Congress and NSUI activists who accused it of glorifying Godse.
The cancellation followed similar disruptions in Rajkot and Jamnagar, where sets were vandalized.
The play’s producer defended it as not glorifying Godse, noting the character acknowledges guilt.
Congress leaders condemned the production as an attempt to rehabilitate Godse and undermine Gandhi’s legacy, while the Bombay High Court previously upheld the right to stage such works.
No official statement was issued on the Ahmedabad cancellation.
