On February 9, 2026, Peter Obi led a protest at Nigeria’s National Assembly in Abuja demanding the Senate reverse its rejection of a clause mandating real-time electronic transmission of election results.
The Senate had removed the term “real-time” from Clause 60(3) of the Electoral Amendment Bill, leaving result transmission methods to INEC’s discretion, sparking widespread criticism from civil society, youth groups, and opposition parties.
Protesters, including activists and members of the Obidient Movement, argued the change undermines transparency and increases the risk of fraud, especially after issues with the IReV portal in 2023.
Security forces were deployed to maintain order, but the demonstration remained peaceful.
The Senate maintained that electronic transmission was not rejected, only the timing, but critics say the move weakens electoral integrity ahead of the 2027 polls.
