New Zealand disbanded a retail crime advisory group early after members resigned, despite spending $1.82M and completing key recommendations.
A New Zealand government advisory group on retail crime is being disbanded four months early in May, following the resignations of three of its five members, including chair Sunny Kaushal and Retail NZ CEO Carolyn Young.
Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith said the group had completed its key objectives, including recommendations on facial recognition and security reforms, which informed the Crimes Amendment Bill.
Despite spending $1.82 million in its first year—slightly over its annual budget—Goldsmith called the early dissolution a practical move given the group's accomplishments and internal tensions.
He maintained Kaushal’s leadership, though criticized, was effective, and confirmed efforts to combat retail crime will continue.
