Mingachevir, Azerbaijan, launched a climate plan with EU support, aiming for 40% emissions cuts by 2030.
Azerbaijan’s Mingachevir has advanced its Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan under the EU’s Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy, becoming the first pilot city in the country. The plan includes 14 energy projects and two adaptation initiatives targeting emissions reductions, energy efficiency, and renewable energy expansion. Supported by the EU and the Covenant of Mayors East, the city is developing concrete actions aligned with national climate goals, including a 40% emissions cut by 2030. The initiative, part of a broader effort involving up to 25 municipalities, provides technical assistance, funding access, and a structured framework for local climate action. Azerbaijan’s participation marks a growing role in international climate cooperation, with focus on energy efficiency, renewable energy, and climate resilience.
