Michigan's Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson highlights Black maternal mortality, pledging to expand care access and reorganize health services.
Jocelyn Benson, Michigan Secretary of State and Democratic gubernatorial candidate, has made expanding pre- and post-natal care for Black mothers a key campaign issue, citing that Black women in the state are nearly three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women.
Speaking in Flint, she pledged to improve maternal health outcomes by broadening access to doula and midwifery services and reorganizing the state health department using her experience in streamlining government operations.
She was joined by maternal health advocate Danielle Atkinson, who shared personal stories highlighting the crisis.
Benson, one of several Democrats running for governor, did not specify funding details.
Other candidates include Republican frontrunners Mike Cox, Tom Leonard, Aric Nesbitt, and John James, along with independent former Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.
