Los Angeles County seeks a 10.25% sales tax to fund health and food programs amid massive coverage losses.
Los Angeles County is proposing a half-cent sales tax increase to 10.25% to generate $1 billion annually for five years, addressing a $2.4 billion funding gap from federal and state cuts to healthcare and food assistance.
The measure, which requires voter approval and could appear on the June 2026 ballot, aims to prevent hospital closures, staff layoffs, and service reductions after over 120,000 people, including nearly 27,000 children, lost Medi-Cal and CalFresh coverage between July and November 2025.
The tax would fund health services, public health programs, and social safety nets, with oversight by a citizens’ committee.
If the Board of Supervisors rejects the proposal, a coalition plans to pursue a ballot initiative.
