Taylor, a former Sydney Morning Herald political correspondent and Walkley Award winner, stepped down during a leadership transition led by global editor-in-chief Katharine Viner, with London-based David Munk named acting editor.
Potential successors include deputy editors Gabrielle Jackson and Patrick Keneally, multimedia head Bridie Jabour, and former deputy Lee Glendinning.
The departure follows internal challenges, including staff turnover and workplace complaints in the Canberra bureau.
Taylor plans to take several months off after her exit.
