Islamist rebels killed at least 20 in a Congo village attack, worsening displacement and crisis.
Islamist-linked rebels, specifically the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), killed at least 20 people in a Saturday attack on Mambimbi-Isigo village in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo’s North Kivu province, according to the Congolese military.
The assault, involving raids on farmland and violent attacks with knives and firearms, triggered mass displacement and worsened the region’s humanitarian crisis.
The death toll remains provisional due to missing civilians, and civil society leaders criticized the limited presence of Congolese army forces.
The ADF, which pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in 2019, has carried out repeated attacks in eastern Congo, including over 100 deaths in July 2025, and has killed at least 62 civilians since January 2026 in Beni and Lubero territories.
UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix began a two-day visit to eastern Congo on Monday, including the affected city of Beni.
