India has launched a Rs 7,280 crore scheme to boost domestic production of sintered rare earth permanent magnets, vital for electric vehicles, wind turbines, and defense systems, aiming to cut imports and strengthen clean energy and mobility goals.
Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy announced the initiative at the 5th Global Electric Mobility Summit 2026, highlighting a 60%+ annual growth in India’s EV market, with nearly 2 million registrations in FY25.
The plan includes customs duty exemptions for critical manufacturing equipment, industrial corridors in four states, and investments in charging infrastructure and battery production under larger PLI schemes totaling over Rs 43,000 crore.
These efforts support India’s target of $7.3 trillion GDP by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070.
