Four Mass. State Police officers indicted over recruit’s death in flawed training exercise.

Four Massachusetts State Police officials—Sergeant Jennifer Penton and troopers Edwin Rodriguez, David Montanez, and Casey LaMonte—were indicted on involuntary manslaughter and serious bodily injury charges in connection with the death of recruit Enrique Delgado-Garcia, 25, during a defensive tactics exercise in September 2024. An independent investigation found the recruit suffered a concussion during unauthorized sparring and later sustained fatal head injuries during a poorly supervised boxing match. Officials are accused of failing to stop unsafe training and acting with reckless disregard for the recruit’s safety. Penton also faces perjury charges. The individuals, not yet arrested, will face arraignment later. The case has drawn national attention to risks in law enforcement training, with calls for reform and safety improvements.
