Former Houston council member Amanda Edwards dropped her congressional bid after losing January's special runoff to Christian Menefee, who will replace Rep. Sylvester Turner.
Former Houston City Council member Amanda Edwards has dropped her campaign for Texas’ 18th Congressional District after losing a January 2026 special runoff to Christian Menefee, who will replace Rep. Sylvester Turner, who died in March 2025.
Edwards, a Democrat, will remain on the March 3 primary ballot but will not campaign.
She plans to refocus on her Do Something Houston voter registration initiative.
The special election followed Turner’s death just months after Sheila Jackson Lee’s passing in July 2024.
Voter turnout was low in the runoff, with fewer than 14,000 early ballots cast, compared to nearly 39,000 in the November election, amid confusion over eligibility and redistricting that shifted the district to favor Republicans.
Menefee will face incumbent Rep. Al Green, who was moved from the 9th District due to a 2025 GOP-led redistricting effort.
