On February 10, 2026, Chile launched Latam-GPT, an open-source AI model developed by the Chilean National Center for Artificial Intelligence to reduce cultural bias in AI systems dominated by U.S.-centric data.
Trained on over eight terabytes of regional data from Latin American countries, the model aims to reflect the region’s linguistic and cultural diversity, supporting applications in healthcare, public services, and customer service.
Unlike proprietary models, Latam-GPT is freely accessible and customizable, with plans to include Indigenous languages and future training on a supercomputer in northern Chile.
Funded with about $550,000, the project seeks to promote regional autonomy in AI development without directly competing with major global platforms.
