U.S. speedskater Connor McDermott-Mostowy is set to make his Olympic debut at the 2026 Winter Games in Milan, Italy, joining a record over 40 openly LGBTQ athletes competing in the Winter Olympics.
The Washington, D.C. native, who uses both parents’ last names, came out after winning gold at the 2021 U.S. speedskating championships and has since advocated for LGBTQ inclusion, particularly for gay men in male-dominated sports.
He missed the 2022 team due to a severe norovirus illness but rebounded with a top finish in the Men’s 1000 meters at the U.S. trials, securing his spot.
He will compete in the 1000 meters and serve as an alternate in the Team Pursuit.
Elected to U.S. Speedskating’s board alongside openly gay teammate Brittany Bowe, McDermott-Mostowy emphasizes authenticity and representation.
