UK committee demands naming of undercover agent Stakeknife linked to 14 murders and 15 abductions during Troubles.
A Westminster committee has urged the UK government to formally name Stakeknife, the former British Army agent believed to be Freddie Scappaticci, linking him to at least 14 murders and 15 abductions during the Troubles.
The Northern Ireland Affairs Committee said revealing his identity would serve the public interest, restore trust in state institutions, and ensure accountability without endangering active agents or harming recruitment.
This follows Operation Kenova’s findings that more lives were likely lost than saved due to his actions.
Despite the government’s longstanding neither confirm nor deny policy, senior officials including Sir Iain Livingstone and PSNI Chief Constable Jon Boutcher supported the move, citing the need for justice and closure for victims’ families.
The committee recommended a review of the NCND policy in legacy cases and pledged to monitor the government’s response.
