A 25-year-old Singaporean man became the first Singaporean punished under Malaysia’s new anti-littering law, fined RM1,500 and ordered to complete four hours of community service for dropping a cigarette butt in Kuala Lumpur on January 1, 2026.
The Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court accepted his guilty plea, noting he cited lack of nearby bins and habits from Singapore.
Under the law, penalties include fines up to RM2,000 or up to 12 hours of community service, with failure to pay leading to one month in jail.
As of February 9, 644 littering cases had been recorded nationwide, with 144 involving foreigners, mostly for cigarette disposal.
The government plans mass community service events, including joint cleanups on February 13.
