A Singapore-Indonesia study (2025–2028) examines why palm farmers in Riau adopt sustainable practices and how those behaviors spread, aiming to improve training and policies.
Musim Mas and NTU Singapore have launched a research project from June 2025 to March 2028 to study why smallholder palm oil farmers in Indonesia’s Riau Province adopt sustainable practices and how those behaviors spread.
Led by NTU’s Associate Professor Janice Ser Huay Lee, the study uses spatial analysis, social network mapping, and surveys to examine social, behavioral, and spatial factors influencing adoption among farmers inside and outside the APSKS-PS association.
The research, involving fieldwork in Pelalawan and Siak districts and collaboration with three Indonesian universities, aims to improve training programs and policies across Southeast Asia.
Musim Mas, which has trained over 40,000 smallholders since 2015, supports the study as part of its sustainability strategy.
The project is independently led by NTU, with Musim Mas providing logistical support and access.
