New Zealand judge Ema Aitken faces scrutiny over claims she disrupted a political event in 2024, denying she shouted or recognized leader Winston Peters.
District Court Judge Ema Aitken appeared before a New Zealand Judicial Conduct Panel in February 2026 over allegations she disrupted a 2024 New Zealand First event at Auckland’s Northern Club, where she reportedly shouted that leader Winston Peters was lying.
Aitken denies shouting, stating she did not recognize Peters’ voice, was unaware it was a political gathering, and only made a quiet comment in the foyer about a statement she believed misrepresented tikanga Māori.
She claims she was passing by after using the restroom and did not intend to cause a disturbance.
The panel, led by Brendan Brown KC, will assess whether her conduct breaches judicial standards and could undermine public confidence, with findings to be submitted to the acting Attorney General for potential disciplinary action, including removal.
The case follows her failed attempt to block the investigation.
