New Zealand is urged to condemn Israel’s destruction of war graves in Gaza, including those of NZ and Commonwealth soldiers, under international law.
The Palestine Solidarity Network Aotearoa is urging New Zealand to condemn Israel’s destruction of New Zealand war graves in Gaza, including the Commonwealth War Cemetery where 23 World War I soldiers and two Cook Islands servicemen are buried.
Palestinian caretaker Essam Jaradah confirmed the graves were desecrated, part of a broader pattern of Israeli actions that have damaged or destroyed at least 16 other cemeteries in Gaza and one housing Canadian soldiers.
PSNA co-chair John Minto criticized New Zealand’s lack of official response, noting no government visit or public condemnation despite the site’s historical significance and protection under international law.
The group argues the destruction reflects Israel’s ongoing violations in occupied territories and calls for accountability.
Meanwhile, Israel claims it destroyed Australian war graves in Palestine because the buried soldiers were allegedly affiliated with Hamas, a claim disputed by Australia and international observers, given Hamas was founded decades after the soldiers died.
Se insta a Nueva Zelanda a que condene la destrucción por parte de Israel de las tumbas de guerra en Gaza, incluidas las de soldados de Nueva Zelanda y de la Commonwealth, de conformidad con el derecho internacional.
