After losing two early wickets, Tim Seifert anchored the innings with a 65 off 42 balls, including seven fours and three sixes, while Glenn Phillips added 42 off 25 deliveries.
A 74-run partnership between Seifert and Phillips steadied the chase, and Mitchell Santner (17 not out) and Daryl Mitchell (25 not out) sealed the win.
Afghanistan had posted 182 for 6, powered by Gulbadin Naib’s 63 off 35 balls and a 79-run third-wicket stand with Sediqullah Atal (29).
The victory marked a strong start for New Zealand in Group D.
