On National Cleft Day, India launched a school program to fight stigma and promote early cleft care through education and support.
On National Cleft Day, Smile Train India and the New Delhi Municipal Council launched a school-based awareness program in 10 NDMC schools, using storytelling, a children’s book series, and a theater workshop to educate students about cleft lip and palate.
The initiative, "The ABCs of Change," aimed to reduce stigma, promote inclusion, and encourage early treatment for the condition, which affects about 1 in 700 births.
With roughly 35,000 new cases in India each year, the program seeks to foster empathy from an early age and support families through education and a toll-free helpline.
