Led by former High Court judge Virginia Bell, the inquiry will examine the attack’s circumstances, rising anti-Semitism and religious extremism, and ways to improve social cohesion. It includes 89 staff and will deliver a final report by December 2026, with an interim report on intelligence agency roles expected in April. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the commission in January amid criticism over delays, and Indigenous Australians Minister Malarndirri McCarthy hopes it will also address broader forms of hatred.
