Indian investors now own more Nifty50 stocks than foreign ones, driven by strong domestic investment flows in 2025.

Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) surpassed foreign institutional investors (FIIs) in ownership of Nifty50 stocks for the first time in December 2025, holding 24.8% compared to FIIs’ 24.3%, according to Motilal Oswal Securities. This structural shift was driven by strong SIP inflows of Rs 3.34 lakh crore in 2025, increased pension fund participation, and institutional buying, while FII holdings hit an eight-quarter low. DIIs raised stakes in 82% of Nifty50 companies, offsetting FII outflows and supporting market resilience despite modest 10% returns.
