Ghana reduced Kumasi's Suame Interchange from four to two tiers due to cost and land issues, sparking criticism over long-term traffic impacts.
The Ghanaian government has scaled back the Suame Interchange project in Kumasi from a four-tier to a two-tier design, citing high compensation costs, land acquisition challenges, and the completion of the Kumasi Outer Ring Road, which reduces traffic pressure on the city center.
Roads Minister Kwame Agbodza defended the change as financially feasible and better aligned with current traffic patterns, arguing it avoids demolishing commercial buildings and police facilities while redirecting funds to other road projects.
The NPP Ashanti Caucus criticized the move, calling it technically unsound and short-sighted, warning it will worsen congestion, shift bottlenecks, and undermine long-term urban planning despite the government’s GH¢43 billion road infrastructure allocation and the project’s inclusion in the 2025 Big Push Road Programme.
