A section of Charlcombe Lane near Bath will be closed from February 9 to March 29, 2026, to protect amphibians during their annual migration.
The Charlcombe Toad Rescue Group, operating since 2003 with council approval, will conduct nightly patrols to safely transport toads, frogs, and newts across the road using torches, buckets, and latex-free gloves.
Since 2003, over 50,000 amphibians have been rescued, reducing road deaths from 62% to 3%.
In 2025, more than 50 volunteers helped 3,995 animals cross, the second-highest total on record, including the first sighting of a great crested newt.
The effort is one of only four such closures in the UK.
